Last year, I didn’t give roxio Creator 2009 an Editors’ Choice, as I had previous versions of the media suite: it crashed too often, and the interface, although improved, was still a confusing jumble of options. But Creator 2010 ($99.99 list) gives roxio a good opportunity to reclaim its position. This year’s suite includes CinemaNow, the online movie service roxio acquired in 2008. Also new are a burning desktop widget, Web video capture, AVCHD archiving, and the ability to pause and schedule long conversion tasks. Plus, it’s fully compatible with Windows 7.

Installation
I installed the suite on a pristine Windows 7 Ultimate machine with a 3-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 250GB hard drive. Installation is improved, taking just 10 minutes, ahead of Nero 9 Reloaded’s 12 minutes on the same PC. I wondered if it was just because I was using a faster system, but when I ran the install on last year’s test system, a 2GHz Athlon dual-core system with 2GB RAM, it was still much quicker: 24 minutes, compared with Creator 2009′s 40 and Nero’s 35.
I was, however, disappointed that I couldn’t choose which suite components to install (Nero now lets me), and that roxio still installs the Google Toolbar by default. A hundred-dollar app shouldn’t do that. Though the standard version of roxio burns Blu-ray data discs, to author movie Blu-ray discs, you need the Pro version, which costs $129.99. Pro also gets you more sophisticated soundtrack tools, disaster recovery, and more advanced photo-editing tools.

Interface
I quickly noticed that Creator grants Windows a Mac OS feature I’ve always thought Microsoft should add: displaying a desktop icon when you insert a disc into your drive. Clicking once on the disc gadget drops down a menu offering to copy or eject the disc, and right-clicking or clicking again on a small down arrow drops down more options. The interface resembles last year’s, but with much less clutter. The home screen offers big icons for the seven most popular functions: Burn data disc, burn image disc, copy disc, burn audio discs, create DVDs, edit video, and copy and convert video. These icons change to match your actual usage.

The first four choices use the same window as the start interface; the rest show up-curved arrows to indicate that they launch another program. Sadly, several of the suite’s sub-apps, like the Media Manager and PhotoSuite, retain outdated interfaces. I still prefer how Nero’s launcher closes and reappears when you run another program in the suite; roxio‘s works as an independent app. I do appreciate that you can just start any major suite component from the Windows Start menu. Another plus is that you can do more right from the home interface, like burn disc images. And the top of each sub-page in the start app now shows the top three actions for each category: e.g., the Music Audio page shows Burn Audio CDs, Rip, and Digitize LPs and Tapes

Video Editing
I encountered my first error message when importing video from my iPhone with roxio Media Import. That’s depressing, but overall I got far fewer errors than in the previous version. The same app works for importing both images and videos. My workaround was to import from the Photo page. This meant, however, that my videos were in the Pictures folder rather than in Videos. And for some reason, it didn’t import the PNG images on the iPhone.

The advanced digital movie editor hasn’t changed much. It can add tons of effects and transitions to your cinematic creations. One notable lack is the ability to rotate video. Most of us have used a point-and-shoot camera or iPhone sideways or upside down to shoot a video. Most popular software—and even some free software (including Picasa)—can rotate video to fix this. It’s overdue in roxio.

The suite’s much-improved CineMagic app makes it easy to create video compilations. CineMagic takes you through a three-step process that combines your footage and photos, and adds background music and titles. New this year, you can select scenes from within your clips. You can even have the selector window automatically highlight scenes that are dark, fuzzy, or those that include action or people. It’s not perfect, however—it missed that one talking head video contained people. I had 16 style choices for my instant movie, from baby to Xtreme. After choosing one, all that was left was picking a title and subtitle and setting the target length.

If you want to do more customization, the software offers more effects and transitions, including 37 in 3D, and a remarkable 99 special effects, from Abstract Stretch to Whirls and Waves. On top of this, you can choose from 37 overlays to add, such as frames and textures, and you can even create custom ones. Over 50 text styles are available for your titles and captions, and you can add your own audio or canned audio as a background soundtrack.

The previous version of Creator hiccupped when I made movies combining standard- and high-definition clips, creating an unviewable result. I’m happy to report that this time around I mixed content of all resolutions without a problem. Using the suite’s powerful VideoWave digital move editor, I successfully mixed MP4, MOV, WMV, and AVCHD MTS in the same production.

I’m still disappointed that CineMagic forces you to choose an audio track to replace the original video’s audio track, which is automatically erased. Even the fledgling, entry-level Corel Digital Studio 2010 lets you mix the original sound with a musical soundtrack in its automatic productions.

Once all your clips and effects are just how you want them, the Output menu gives you welcome new choices: share online, and Send to MyDVD. The workflow to disc authoring was something I’d missed in the last version. In the online sharing option, you can sign into your YouTube account right from VideoWave. The exporter created a YouTube-compatible version of my clip in a mere 3 minutes.

Authoring DVDs
MyDVD offers over 50 DVD menu styles, so you’re likely to find one that’s appropriate. You can have the burning software fit your project size to the target disc or leave it original size. MyDVD also includes a Plug & Burn feature for getting movies straight from your camcorder to disc. The software can autodetect chapters, but you may need to double-check this, as it created many inappropriate three-second chapters in my production. MyDVD encoded my 665MB, 8-minute test DVD in 4 minutes and burned it in 3 minutes. The resulting disc played flawlessly in a separate DVD player.

The new AVCHD Archive feature is handy for owners of camcorders using that recording standard. It lets them offload video content from the camera onto DVDs or Blu-ray discs at the original resolution. Multiple discs can be spanned if necessary, and the interface makes the process a straightforward one.

You can label your discs with a separate utility that gives you lots of control over the style, text, and layout of your labels; it supports LightScribe and LabelFlash drives, which can burn the title info directly onto special disc media.

Playing Movies
The player component of the suite, CinePlayer, handles 20 common video formats. Most importantly, it had no problem playing Winged Migration and Dances with Wolves, even though my monitor was connected with DVI without an HDCP-compliant monitor. It can now play back Blu-ray discs, but only if you spring for an extra $50 plug-in.

New in this version of Creator is integration with CinemaNow, which lets you rent and buy digital movies. roxio Venue implements this capability: it’s little more than a browser that displays the CinemaNow Web site. The selection included recent DVD releases you’d see in your local video store.

You can either purchase the videos for unlimited viewing at a cost of about $9.99 to $19.99, or rent them for a single viewing (within 24 hours) for about $2.99 to $3.99. You can play bought movies on up to three devices. Some of the movies are available in HD, but none of these are major titles. When I bought From Hell, starring Johnny Depp, my only viewing choice was to watch it on the current PC. About 15 seconds after my download started, enough had buffered that I could start watching. When I hit the full-screen button, I could see that the movie was playing in Windows Media Player. The picture was crisp, but the sound was muffled and with occasional stutters.

Could I burn a DVD to play the movie I’d bought on my TV? The answer is a qualified yes: Most movies don’t allow it, and you need a “Qflix”-compliant burner and special Qflix media—neither of which are common. Also, it takes a long time and several gigabytes of disk space to get ready for the burn.

Could I play my purchased movie on a portable? Again, a qualified yes: You can watch some movies on Windows “Plays for Sure” devices, but not on the iPod or iPhone, Microsoft Zune, or Creative Zen—three of the most popular handhelds. You can, however, use most Archos players and the Samsung P2. Instructions for watching these movies on your TV screen seem outdated, with no mention of HDMI

Burning and Copying
Windows 7 adds the ability to burn a disc image file (usually an ISO), but it would be an understatement to call the built-in app bare-bones. roxio‘s tools let you create bootable and read-only discs, and offer a more friendly and option-filled interface in general. Windows 7, too, burns Blu-ray discs, but again, roxio gives you more control. I still favor ImgBurn for image burning, though its interface doesn’t offer much hand-holding.

If you want to burn a backup disc of common personal file types, Creator will scan your disk for e-mails, financial records (such as from QuickBooks, Microsoft Money, and Turbo Tax), and other documents of interest. You can also drag files onto its windows to include them on the data disc you’re burning.

On the 3-GHz system, I burned 3GB of data onto a DVD in under 14 minutes. Burning a CD was also snappy, as in last year’s tests: 78 minutes of music took just 2 minutes and 43 seconds to burn. Nero 9 Reloaded, however, took just 10 minutes and 31 seconds for the DVD burn and 2 minutes and 53 seconds to burn the same songs to CD.

roxio Video Copy & Convert makes it easy to transfer your video files to a multitude of target devices, including discs (DVD or Blu-ray), handhelds like the PSP, iPhone, Zune, Xbox, TVs, and video files. This is a separate issue from the CinemaNow content, which is more limited in portable device support. But roxio makes it easier to rip video from streaming Web sources (like YouTube) than do other suites. You just click the big Web Video button, start your video, and ,when it’s done playing, you’ll be able to save the clip to any of the above targets. But when I tried this with my iPhone, I couldn’t copy the video to the phone’s storage. After installing iTunes, the problem went away.

The cute SyncIt! gadget accomplishes about the same and pops up when you choose Drag-and-Drop convert from the main Video menu. Last time I tested this it was quite unstable, but this time it accepted and output various file formats with aplomb.

Photo
Despite its dated interface, roxio‘s PhotoSuite offers a wealth of photo editing capabilities. In addition to autofix, you can straighten, fix red eyes, manipulate brightness and contrast, adjust sharpness, smooth wrinkles, and clear up blemishes. The red eye fixer is a bit behind those in other products: It actually gave a blue hue to whole eye sockets in one of my tests. I prefer Picasa’s one-click red-eye fixer. The other fixers worked well, and the Mobile Photo Doctor will be welcome to phone shutterbugs. There’s a separate app that enhances multiple photos at once, and, as with PhotoSuite, you can drag and drop multiple photos onto it for editing.

There are plenty of Photoshop-like special effects and filters: clone brush, shapes, and cutouts, but no magic wand–style auto silhouetting. Special effects include filters like emboss, posterize, and funhouse mirrors—over a hundred in all. Text tools are full-fledged as well, letting you easily add captions in many fonts and any size; I could even rotate them, just as in Picasa.

roxio offers a wealth of tools for making calendars, collages, posters, and cards, but unlike Picasa and Corel Digital Studio, there’s no way to create a photo book; and the collage tool, although flexible, isn’t as slick as Picasa’s. A slideshow app doesn’t allow dragging and dropping. roxio has updated its PhotoShow online slideshow sharing service with a slider that lets viewers skip around in a show, display images faster, and import from e-mail. But PhotoShow is completely separate from the image and slideshow editors. You can post a PhotoShow directly to Facebook or your PhotoShow page. While you use PhotoShows, there are frequent messages about why you should upgrade to a premium version. One is that you can’t post shows containing more than 24 images with a free account

Music and Audio
I used my a iPhone recording of a windwood quintet concert to test roxio Sound Editor. I wasn’t interested in fading and volume manipulation, but “clean up audio” sounded useful. This tool offers declicker, decrackler, and denoiser. The last did a nice job of getting out the background hiss. A separate audio tag editor can pull CD info from the GraceNote service, or you can enter your own track details.

The suite also includes a helpful how-to for converting LPs and tapes to digital formats. The cleaning tools mentioned above are great for this. You can also create music discs on either CD or DVD, and even use BeatMatch to keep your party playlist rolling. The Audiobook tool will take a CD audiobook and convert it for your portable music player (yes, even iPod), preserving chapter names for display on the device.

Ripping songs from CD to my test PC at a 256-Kbps bit rate took roxio 4 minutes and 26 seconds; Nero needed 2 minutes and 48 seconds. The “Time Remaining” indicator was useless, constantly showing increasing and decreasing estimates. Unlike most ripping software, roxio doesn’t display a progress bar for each song, but Nero doesn’t show you an overall “time remaining” estimate, so it’s a toss up.

Conclusion
My overall impression from running the tools in roxio Creator 2010 is that the suite’s been tightened up considerably—I encountered far fewer bugs than I did last year. Plus, the suite’s already staggering number of media editing, authoring, recording, and transcoding tools has been bolstered by a more usable interface and some useful new tools.

True, Nero 9 Reloaded burned discs slightly faster on both DVD and CD tests and on multiple machines. And some apps in roxio‘s suite are starting to look a bit outdated, and occasionally when I banged on it by performing actions in quick succession, an app would close or become unresponsive. But overall, roxio Creator 2010 makes commendable headway over last year’s version. I can’t declare a definitive Editor’s Choice in the digital media space until I’ve put Nero 9 Reloaded and CyberLink DVD Suite through their paces, however. Stay tuned.

The previous avast! antivirus 4.8 Home Edition looked more like a media player utility than an antivirus app. If that wasn’t strange enough, the included “skins” feature could make it look like just about anything. With version 5.0 avast! gets a more standard rectangular appearance. You can’t disguise it as a Star Trek instrument panel any more, but finding features is a lot easier. The core antivirus/antispyware engine got a rewrite for this edition, and it also got some new components to aid in the fight. A new heuristics engine watches process behavior to detect malware that signatures won’t catch. A new code emulator lets avast! evaluate behaviors without letting a process run, and it also lets the app examine programs that are packed to conceal their contents.

This version adds scheduled scanning and optional detection of less risky “potentially unwanted programs.” The latest avast! uses a new virus database format optimized for incremental updates. And the new gaming mode suppresses popups when it detects a program running in full-screen mode. Other notable features include boot-time scanning, wake-up from sleep mode to scan, and automatic scanning of files received through e-mail, IM, and P2P applications. And, unlike AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0, avast!’s free edition has all the power of the paid Pro edition.

Decent Test Results
Austrian lab AV-Comparatives released a number of tests toward the end of last year. avast! rated ADVANCED+, the best possible rating, in a test measuring performance impact. Out of eight tests throughout the year avast! scored ADVANCED+ in three, ADVANCED in four, and merely STANDARD in 1.

While avast! didn’t come close to receiving “product of the year” AV-Comparatives did award it a bronze medal for fast on-demand scanning. I can’t figure that one out; my own results show it scanning significantly slower than average. Both ICSA Labs and West Coast Labs certified avast!’s ability to detect malware, and it received the VB 100% award from Virus Bulletin in eight of the last ten Windows-based tests. Overall, the lab results are positive, though not overwhelming.
Two-Stage Malware Removal
Installation on my malware-infested test systems went quickly, for the most part. The installer wouldn’t fully load on one system, but a remote-control session with ALWIL tech support worked around that problem. After installation, the realtime “shields” found some malware processes over and over, racking up hundreds of notifications faster than I could click them away. I ignored the alerts and launched full scans.

A full scan by avast! took quite a while. Where the average anti-malware tool scans my standard clean test system in half an hour, avast! took one and a quarter hours. A repeat scan still took over an hour.

When the product detects malware running in memory, it offers to run a boot-time scan. Even if a regular scan is running, this option interrupts it to reboot. The boot-time scan lets avast! clean up the infestation without interference from active malware. Most of the infested test systems requested a boot-time scan either during or after the regular full scan. I find it somewhat annoying that the boot-time scan halts when it finds a threat and waits for instructions. Even after I chose “Move all to chest,” the boot-time scan sometimes halted again if it encountered a threat in the Windows folder.

One system requested the boot-time scan over and over, without end, though after the first time the boot scan reported “no virus found.” Several other systems popped up real-time malware warnings even after the on-demand scanner claimed to have cleaned up all threats. I’d like to see the program fully remove every threat it detects.

On completing a regular scan, the program displays a table showing what it found. You can review the results or simply apply the default action to all found threats. By default, avast! moves all found traces to quarantine (which it calls the “virus chest”). This caused serious problems on one virus-infested test system, as it wiped out all legitimate files that the virus had tainted. I would have preferred that it first try to clean the virus from the infected files.

The lengthy double scan proved its worth in the end, as the boot-time scan did a lot of cleanup. avast! scored 7.1 of 10 points in the malware removal test, better than Panda Cloud Antivirus Free Edition 1.0 with 6.7 points and a hair better than Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0 with 7.0 points.

The paid programs do score substantially higher on the malware removal test. Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus 2010 is the top scorer, with 8.3 points, and norton Internet Security 2010 is next, with 8.0.

In a separate test using commercial keyloggers, avast! scored a below-average 3.8 points. HouseCall 7.1 scored highest of the free products in this test, with 5.3 points. Fortunately for avast!, anti-keylogger isn’t highly weighted in my tests.

Rootkit removal results were interesting. avast! detected 89 percent of rootkit samples, compared to an impressive 100 percent for Panda. But avast!’s cleanup was better, so it scored 5.5 points to Panda’s 4.9. HouseCall split the difference with 5.2 points. Paid leaders norton Internet Security and Spyware Doctor scored much higher, with 7.9 and 7.7 points, respectively.

avast! scored 5.3 points for removal of scareware (rogue security software), a fraction higher than AVG. Panda scored 7.0 on this test and Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware 1.36 did even better, with 7.3 points. Even the mostly-bad IObit Security 360 did well on this test, scoring 6.7 points
Multi-Layer Malware Blocking
Like Spyware Doctor and Webroot, avast! uses a multi-layered approach to keeping malware out of your system. The File System Shield scans files on access, Web Shield scans Web traffic for threats, Network Shield blocks network-based viruses and known bad Web sites, and Behavior Shield alerts you to suspicious programs. Other shields scan all files received through e-mail, IM, and P2P file sharing.

I tried to re-download my collection of malware samples, those whose URLs were still functional. avast! blocked access to a quarter of the URLs and the file shield caught half of the samples on download.

Next I tried launching my already-downloaded samples. Just clicking a sample triggered avast!’s file shield protection, which wiped out 80 percent of the samples right away. Several times during this process avast! reported that it had detected malware in memory and requested a boot-time scan. That was clearly incorrect, as no malware had been launched. When I repeated this test using hand-modified copies of the samples it detected exactly the same ones. My tweaks didn’t fool avast! at all.

One shield or another caught almost all the remaining threats at some point during the install process. avast!’s 9.4 point score for malware blocking is better than any free product except Panda (Panda and for-pay Spyware Doctor share the top spot in this test with 9.7 points).

In a test using commercial keyloggers avast! scored 3.9 points, well below average. Panda topped all paid and free programs in this test with 9.0 points. Lucky for ALWIL I don’t give the keylogger test as much weight.

Though it boasts a rootkit-blocking module avast! scored just 5.9 points in the rootkit blocking test. Panda owned this test with a perfect 10; it completely blocked all the rootkit samples. avast! scored 8.2 points against scareware; Panda and many paid products turned in a perfect 10 of 10 points.

Logitech has cranked out quite a crew of Harmony remotes over the years. All seem to handle well, control a decent amount of devices, and are unbelievably easy to program. So how can you pick which one is right for you? Well, if you’re on a budget, the $99 Harmony 650 would be the obvious choice.
Design

That’s not to say that the 650 feels cheap by any means. It has the standard rectangular remote shape, but is sturdy enough to go a few rounds under your couch cushions. Buttons are laid out nicely and respond well to a soft touch. Being a bit of a discount model, the 650 skips RF and there’s no touchscreen. It does have a small color LCD, which is nothing to brag about, but adds a little flash to favorite channels and commands.

One other noticeable feature: This baby takes batteries. Many other Harmony units offer docking stations. However, the lower cost means you’ll have to keep a stash of AAs around the house.
Programmability

Logitech says to set aside 45 minutes to set up the remote. It may seem long, but it’s pretty on-target—and actually flies by. Upon entering the two included AA batteries, the LCD instructs you to choose language and then head on over to Harmony’s website. As with all Harmony remotes, you will need a computer and web access for programming.

Our PC immediately recognized the remote. However, it would have been nice if the website had popped up, so we didn’t have to look it up (it’s www.logitech.com/myharmony, if you want to cheat).

Choose your OS and download the software. Installation took just under 5 minutes on our Vista-enabled laptop. Once launched, the software asks if you want to look for updates. You’ll also need to create an account, which is just a user name, password and security question in case you forget both. From there, add your name, an email address, and country of residence.

Now that the introductions are out of the way, we can get down to the business of adding components. We connected the remote via the included USB, clicked Next, and got—a timed-out session. If memory serves, this has happened to us before with other Harmony units. However, we easily logged back in and were adding devices in under a minute.

Although this might seem like the most daunting task, Logitech could not make it easier. Devices are added through a series of pull-down menus for Device, Manufacturer and Model. This is where you might take up the most time, running around to check what those model numbers actually are. It shouldn’t take too long, though, as the 650 only controls five devices total. We went with the obvious: our Olevia HDTV, Dish Network HD DVR, Pioneer Receiver, Samsung Blu-ray Player, and Philips DVD Recorder. Logitech hasn’t caught up with an entry for Blu-ray, but it can be added as a DVD player and get the same result. Other goodies that can be put under the Harmony’s control include lighting and climate systems, media center PCs, DAT decks, and more. It also has a spot for gaming consoles—just not our Nintendo Wii or PS3, which need Bluetooth, not infrared.

Next, you’ll be asked to set up Activities, which group select functions under one button-press. For instance, to Watch a DVD, we chose the Samsung Blu-ray player for the DVD, our Pioneer receiver for volume control, and the TV’s HDMI input as our source selection. Once completed all of the setup, the remote should sync. However, we got—yes, another timed-out session message. We were fooled once, twice, and then we opted to just be remembered on the computer.

Once everything was inputed, we were flipping channels and firing up the TV without a glitch. As with any new remote, there may be a small learning curve. However, Logitech could not make this thing any easier, thanks to a simple, easy-to-understand button layout.
Conclusion

It’s hard to hate the Harmony. It’s even harder to hate the Harmony for under $100. Surprisingly at that price, the 650 still has the functionality of pricier controllers, but it’s limited to only five devices. For many, that’s just about right—or at least a nice way to ditch five random remotes. If you’re looking to shave a few extra bucks off the price, the 600 is Logitech’s monochrome model.

I wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed my sample pack this weekend. I have bought the Enhanced Sampler Pack several times and decided to try the M.A. Sampler Pack. Don’t get me wrong, the Enhanced Sampler is KILLER, I was curious and decided to try the M.A. Sample Pack not knowing if it was even going to be any good. I sweated it out after I ordered it thinking that I messed up ordering it. When it came I tore open the package like a kid at Christmas wondering what it would be like. I was totally shocked at how much was in those samples. Even the free sample of Capillarius Herba was PACKED and was in the same size bag as the others were in. The other sites only give you a tiny bag and it ain’t nowhere near full. I spent the weekend trying them all out, and I have to say that they live up to the descriptions that your site gives for them. I couldn’t even begin to tell you which one I liked the best, they were all that good! The biggest problem I have now is deciding which one I’ll order next. Maybe I’ll try the Updated Herbal Sampler. I had to quit smoking the illegal smoke after 20+ years due to employment reasons. I had done some research at various web sites and they kept referring back to “Another Site” saying it was the #1 place to go. I like bg swats and the rw 57 is tasty. sticky buds are remarkably similar to another smokeable plant I am familiar with, and tampico gold can render your favorite harsh smokes more smokeable. I also received a bonus 1/4 oz. of a sticky icky which I still dont know what to do with. I would assume it is to be grinded up and smoked but it is very hard to break. thanks.

On the label was a hand written description of “Klip Dagga” I have looked thru thru your web site but only find wild dagga. Is this the same thing? Let me start by telling you that I never give anyone any feed back on any product I buy, until I bought something from you. You actually aren’t telling a lie when you say you have the best products around. To be honest, when I read some of your customers letters saying how good your products are,I didn’t believe it. I thought that someone had just made up those letters until I took a chance and bought one of your sample packs (Enhanced Sampler). It truly made a believer out of me, no shit. When I opened the envelope and pulled out the bag of samples,”Oh my God” was my reaction. I honestly was suprised at how big the quarter ounce samples were. I wished they looked that good when I use to buy the other stuff. I had recently purchased a supposedly full ounce of Herbal buds from another site and it didn’t even have as much in the bag as just the BG Swats sample had in it. Aloha, I just read about your sticky bud……is it anything like wild dagga flower(wow!!, as soon as I can Iam ordering some…that sample was killer). Kinda diff when the color red. Called Quorum, this new engine doesn’t adversely affect norton‘s performance–a major concern after years of system-crippling sluggishness. It works in concert with norton Insight, introduced last year as a whitelist-style guard for ”trusted” files. By examining your files and how they behave–both locally and when trying to access the Internet–and comparing them with other norton users, Symantec claims that it offers better protection than its competitors. Like its competitors who also have behavioral detection systems, however, norton allows you to opt out of anonymously submitting your data without sacrificing the protection that Quorum provides. Third-party detection and removal ratings are not available for this new version, but last year’s results placed norton in the upper echelon for efficacy.

norton AntiVirus lacks the premium services offered in norton Internet Security. These include a firewall, parental controls, Wi-Fi protection for unsecured hot spots, and identity protection including antiphishing tools and browser search result authentication for Internet Explorer and Firefox. norton AntiVirus also offers only one license, instead of the three that come with its bigger brother. It does offer the same support network, lacking a searchable knowledge base but including e-mail, IM, phone support and the Symantec forums. The trial has been doubled from 15 days to 30. norton‘s recent approach to performance and its continued efficacy make norton AntiVirus 2010 a must-consider program for its class.

According to trend micro, the programs boot times are 20 percent faster and use 40 percent less RAM, the download size is 25 percent smaller, and that the quick scan on Windows XP and Vista is 20 percent faster. There are new features, too. Although, many of them didn’t make it into trend micro Internet Security or trend micro Antivirus and Antispyware suites. This is problematic because the feature set is trend micro strength, but to get it, you have to pay for the Pro version.

Installation
One thing that trend micro doesn’t do is tell how it calls out its behavioral engine, which is used to determine when a program is acting in an unsafe manner. There is a box you can check at installation to opt out of the behavioral program, but there’s no clear explanation of what it is or what it does in the application. On the one hand, technology that lets the publisher leverage supposedly anonymous data from customers to catch surreptitiously-running threats faster isn’t new; it’s been around for a few years. However, this year more security suites are adopting behavioral engines. On the other hand, companies like trend micro must consider whether users will panic if it is mentioned clearly and then disable their computers from contributing data to the cloud.

As long as the data is truly kept anonymous, a behavioral engine can be an exceptional tool for preventing malware. But in trend micro‘s installation process, it looks like nothing more than another box and line item to read before installing; it could benefit from a more detailed explanation.

A customized installation process is available for people who wish to configure program location and tweak components. trend micro will also run a virus check once it’s done installing and automatically update its definition files.

Interface and features
trend micro‘s 2010 interface has been refined from the previous year’s version, with less dead space and more emphasis on both security status and ease-of-access to its security tools. The program launches into its Overview tab that highlights your security status with a large colored icon: green for Protected, and Red for Unprotected. Underneath that tab are links to your protection status, your license information, and a security report.

Each of these links drills down to essential information, exposing them in an elegant and uncluttered manner on the main page. The Protection Status link opens a window that details the status of your virus definition files, updates, firewall, unauthorized change prevention, spam filter, parental controls, and data theft prevention. Each of these has a green On or red Off status icon with a hidden explanation of each that can read by clicking on it. Unfortunately, there’s no way to get from the list to the deeper controls for each–it’s simple for toggling the status.

Also on the Overview tab are two buttons: one for activating a scan and one for manually updating the definition files. The scan button defaults to a Quick Scan, although it has a drop-down menu on its right side for selecting a Full Scan or Custom Scan. Scanning opens the scan window, which details which threats it’s looking for, what files it’s scanning, live results, and options to run in the background or shut down the computer after the scan has finished. Depending on how you set up the program, it will either automatically fix any threats found or ask for input. If you choose to auto-fix it, the app will still show you a window after the scan is complete, detailing what action was taken, and the threat links to more detailed information on trend micro‘s Web site.

The Virus & Spyware Controls tab offers four drop-down menus. The first checks for real-time viruses and spyware when you download files, leveraging the behavioral heuristics. The behavioral scan can be toggled on or off with a button, and it offers a configuration menu with a secondary, advanced features window, and a whitelist/blacklist link that is for cookie control. Despite what sounds like a confusing series of submenus, in practice, it was easy to navigate.

The Prevent Unauthorized Changes drop-down menu offers more control of installations. This is where you would manage programs that trend micro doesn’t recognize, with the same on/off toggle and links to settings and exceptions. The next tab is for configuring scheduled scans and custom scans. It’s frustrating that such a key feature is buried deep in the interface, especially since most users are still wary of holes in real-time protection. This scheduler only controls scan schedules–it doesn’t offer update scheduling. There’s another scheduler for updates, in another part of the program. Underneath the scheduler is the Quarantine section that helpfully categorizes the quarantined files as viruses, spyware, and Trojans.

The Personal Firewall Controls tab continues the interface scheme, with headline-style options that expose key information in a drop-down menu and link to options configuration windows. Through the advanced settings pane, the personal firewall exposes a wealth of firewall data, including the IP version, protocol used, and a simple description. Editing a protocol exposes even more data, for those who know how to use it.

Also in the Firewall Controls tab is the Network Connection status, which offers a cutoff switch to kill the Internet connection. We’re not sure how useful this feature is, or if it’s just a hand-holding measure.

The Internet & Email Controls tab–the next major section–contains the data theft prevention lists, parental controls, spam filter, and protection against Web threats. Its features share lists, although not features use all of the lists. For example, the Data Theft Prevention feature will block numbers and names that you specify from being sent through Web-based forms. The theft prevention feature only works in SMTP e-mail and instant-message clients in the Pro version. You can also select protocols that are allowed to send protected data, and which aren’t. You can also insert customized data field to protect. The Web threats protection, which works to stop phishing and pharming, is heavily based on a firewall-style slider combined with whitelists and blacklists. Again, its efficacy is debatable, especially when a Web site’s backend servers or ad server can be hacked without the site itself registering as risky.

As with many of trend micro‘s competitors, the parental control section can be configured for Adult, Teen, or Child. However, here you also have the option for “Mature Teen” and to customize a setting. The Adult user or system administrator can set access times based on user log-in, and customize the protected data field. Each of these options under Internet & Controls sports a green On or red Off toggle for quick verification.

Conclusion
trend micro looks and feels like a professional security suite, but it’s worrying that it doesn’t participate in the major tests that their competitors are comfortable with. At the same time, it includes behavioral detection, which is becoming more important for catching more complicated threats. The mobile support is worthwhile for peace of mind, and for reminding users that just because you’re on a cell phone doesn’t mean you’re risk-free. However, that’s only available in the most expensive of trend micro‘s three packages. Overall, trend micro gives users a lot for their money, but lacks the verification from independent testers to be considered your best bet.
